- Tensile strength (190k PSI and up) and whip are the two specs that separate a lifting bar from a decorative one.
- Bushings are lower-maintenance and quieter; needle bearings spin faster and suit Olympic lifting. Both are rebuildable on a good bar.
- Knurl depth should match your lifts — aggressive for deadlifts, moderate for cleans, and a center knurl only if you back squat heavy.
- Look for a bar sold with replacement parts and a lifetime bend warranty. A bar that can be re-sleeved is a thirty-year purchase.
